Lucky number 6 in the Glitch Library Design Sessions programme are designer couple Richard Niessen & Esther de Vries, coming to Bucharest all the way from Amsterdam. They describe their work as “lyrical design”: expressive and imaginative, using a richer language to appeal to the senses and the intellect. Their work is involved, subjective and personal in origin. It is spontaneous, even conversational, not intended to impress with its erudition or cleverness. (Remember to check some of their publications in the Editorial Section of Glitch Library on your next visit).
Design sessions in the Glitch Library and Rezidența9
Hosted in the Library, Esther De Vries will dedicate her lecture to her practice of book design, bringing to the library stories, insights, years of experience and a handful of the beautiful books she has designed for everybody to see, feel and leaf through.
Hosted at Rezidența9, Richard Niessen will speak about his graphic design practice, diving into his legendary self-initiated project, The Palace of Typographic Masonry, going deep into why he loves & collects books, what’s on his shelves and how’s spending Halloween in Romania.

Richard Niessen is a graphic designer living and working in Amsterdam, known for his colorful posters and expressive typography, innovative identities and his collaborations with other artists. “By stacking and ordering typographic elements, he creates interweaving linear patterns that have virtually no equivalent anywhere else in the Dutch graphic design field”.
Besides working in commissions, he initiates autonomous projects, like The Palace of Typographic Masonry, started in 2015. It brings together experiment, research, connection with other disciplines and the embedding of graphic design in a broader cultural history.
Niessen teaches at the KABK in The Hague, conducts workshops around the world, holds lectures and exhibits his work all over the world.
Esther de Vries graduated in 1998 from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Since then, she has designed educational projects for/with children, exhibitions, spatial installations, sets, videos, websites, magazines but the heart of her practice lies in making books. As an editorial designer “her attitude is almost that of an artist, a book is almost its own work without losing touch with the core of the brief, rather the content is honed in the translation into a book.” The books Esther has designed have often been awarded Best Dutch Book Designs. She also teaches at art schools with regularly.
